$9.8-million Roncesvalles roadwork to continue at least until April

Roncesvalles still isn't finished. But it's getting there. Work on this second phase of road-munching began in July, and is expected to be finished by April or May.

The current $9.2-million phase of work, being carried out by Sanscon Construction, includes TTC track construction, transit platform construction, road reconstruction and resurfacing, sidewalk repair and streetscaping, including continuous soil trenches to give planted trees more root freedom.

The earlier work, carried out between July, 2009 and May of this year included water main and sewer replacement over the same 2km stretch of beleaguered road roughly between Queen and Dundas.

"More or less, all of the infrastructure was of an age that it needed significant repair or replacement," says John Kelly of the city's technical services division. "The surface works were the first to be identified as required, and we always try to co-ordinate any underground utility work with road reconstruction to maximize the life span of the road by minimizing the need to cut into it in the future."

So, stiff upper lips till May, then, to all those business owners behind the cheeky, door-mounted Construction Sucks posters.

Roncesvalles gets 8,600 square foot LCBO

Roncesvalles is finally getting its own LCBO. Opening on July 19 at 2290 Dundas Street West at Bloor, the 8,600 square foot store (5,600 square feet of selling space) will carry 2,400 brands, with a 390-strong Vintages section.

"We wanted to get a tore into the Roncesvalles village," says LCBO spokesman Chris Layton. "Previously, the closest store was at Brock and Queen, which is more towards Parkdale."

Hours will be Monday to Wednesday, 10am-8pm, Thursday-Saturday 10am-9pm, and Sunday noon to 5pm.

The store is moving in to the retail property anchored by Loblaws, which also houses a Zellers, a Firestone and a Coffee Time.

St. Joseph's hospital's new 130,000 square foot wing reaches height

The Our Lady of Mercy patient care wing, an addition to the St. Joseph's Health Centre on the Queensway just west of Roncesvalles, has reached its fourth and top floor on its way to a 2012 completion.

"It's a redevelopment project that's been on the go for several years now,' says Sabrina Divell, chief of corporate communications for the hospital. "It's going to bring expanded healthcare services to the Toronto west-end community we serve, including minimally invasive surgical suites, and its going to expand our paediatric services, including more labour and delivery rooms."

When finished, the wing will add 130,000 square feet to the hospital, with 92 new beds and a three-storey underground parking structure that will be able to accommodate 300 cars.

The project, employing between 40 and 100 workers on site every day, is part of the province's $32.5-billion investment in health infrastructure, announced a year ago.
